Gainsborough and District

BUCCANEERS

Status:Active, open to new members

Our group is unusual as it was set up to encourage members to try their hand at activities they secretly wanted to try out but needed others to support them. We have been on zip wires and the equivalent to "Go Ape"; we've driven 4x4s, learnt archery, discovered the opera and ballet and Escape Rooms, to name but a few of our activities.

If the venue can only take a few, then those members who come to the planning meetings are first in line. If it is a larger outing, we are open to any Gainsborough u3a members who would like to come. We also join with the visits group, at times, to make an outing viable.

If you are interested in joining our group, sign up for events on a Thursday or use the contacts page to send a message to us.

May 21st. Market Rasen Treasure Trail. 17 of us took part in this. Starting with a coffee and ending with lunch ( in the typical u3a style), we all completed the treasure trail, with varying degrees of success. Clue 17 got the better of several teams but 2 clever ones found all the answers and successfully cracked the code.

It was a really good day and the weather was kind to us.

Our Last Events:

On May 30th, 5 of us tried our hand at pottery. The aim was to make a highland cow. We messily fashioned, smoothed and rolled clay and had plenty of fun in amongst. The results, before firing can be seen below. The event included a drink and lovely cake and afterwards we had a relaxing stroll by the river.

Four of us went to see the Northern ballet of Gentleman Jack at Sheffield Lyceum. What a treat that was! Now we are awaiting Wuthering Heights in April 2027

Market Rasen on 21st May saw 17 of us descend on, it to challenge ourselves to a Treasure Trail there. We set off at intervals, in 5 teams,, and, through carefully (and not so carefully) following the given clues, we found out much about the town: though not all of us were successful in solving the code.

The ballets of Cinderella and The Nutcracker at the Savoy Cinema were thoroughly enjoyed and members intend to try and see Giselle went it is shown and also “ have a go at” the operas! we tend to go on a Sunday afternoon booking seats round E4. Ask at the Planning Group for information as details are on our WhatsApp group.

Cleethorpes Treasure Trail plus fish and chip lunch took place on Sept. 24th . It was a really good day; the weather was lovely and we had lots of fun following the clues round the town and promenade area.
The fish and chips were excellent too!

Bomber Command, We had an excellent visit to bomber command in Lincoln. Not only were we blessed with sunny weather but our volunteer guide was most interesting and knowledgeable. The thirteen of us all agreed that it was a thought visit and we could not be other than moved reading some of the stories of those who served and lost their lives.

Katakanuing at Activities Away Lincoln, took place on August 28th 11.0am and a good time was had by all, even the member who got very wet!

Nordic  walking 30th April I great time was had by all on a very warm day, in beautiful surroundings. Thanks to Tracy, our instructor for her calm and patient teaching.

Ballet: Jane Eyre 24th April Sheffield Lyceum

The ballet was superb. We would highly recommend it as it really brough the novel to life in a beautifully imagined dance.

Past Events

Southwell Treasure Trail. May 2025 What a lovely place to go exploring.

The Louth Treasure Trail on October 24th  was great fun. All the groups found one clue rather challenging, however we are getting ready to go on another Trail in the near future.

Equally our visit to see the ballet A Christmas Carol was interesting: the ballet was superb, but unfortunately our train back to Gainsborough was cancelled... husbands came to the rescue, driving rather more miles than they expected!

The Tuxford Walks for Life and Horse Museums visited on 26th September 2024

Below are pictures of our visit to the Sculpture park at Doddington Hall

Beaver Trail, Idle Valley Friday 5th July
